ISI MARK CERTIFICATION

BIS ISI Mark Certification

BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) ISI (Indian Standards Institution) Certification is a widely recognized mark of quality and safety in India, ensuring that products conform to the specific standards laid down by the Bureau of Indian Standards. This certification confirms that a product has undergone rigorous testing and evaluation and meets all the prescribed technical, safety, and performance requirements. The ISI mark is one of the most trusted and respected quality symbols in the Indian market, signifying reliability, durability, and consumer safety. It plays a crucial role in protecting customers from substandard products while promoting fair trade practices. BIS ISI Certification is mandatory for many products such as electrical appliances, industrial goods, cement, steel, and other consumer items. Overall, this certification helps manufacturers build credibility, ensures legal compliance, and enhances market acceptance across India.

What is ISI Mark and Why It’s Important?

The ISI Mark is a certification mark issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) that indicates a product complies with the Indian safety, quality, and performance standards. ISI stands for Indian Standards Institution, the former name of BIS. This mark assures consumers that the product has been tested in BIS-recognized laboratories and meets all the prescribed requirements for reliability and safety. The ISI Mark is mandatory for many products such as electrical appliances, industrial materials, cement, steel, and household items. It helps prevent the sale of substandard goods, protects consumer interests, and ensures fair trade practices. For manufacturers, the ISI Mark enhances brand credibility, legal compliance, and market acceptance across India.

Overview

1. About BIS
1. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the national Standards Body of India working under the aegis of Ministry of consumer affairs, food & public distribution, Government of India.
2. Established by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 which came into effect on 23 December 1986.

2. Importance of ISI mark
1. BIS Certification (for ISI Marking) has been made mandatory for certain items/products, which are considered necessary from the point of view of health, safety, environment, prevention of deceptive practices, consumer security, etc.
2. More than 20,000 Indian standards are published by BIS in interest of consumer security, prevention of deceptive practices.
3. ISI Marking can also be granted on other items/products on voluntary basis.

• Submission of test report to BIS.

Step:2

• Submission of application to BIS.
• Scrutiny of BIS application.

Step:3

• Factory Audit by BIS officer.
• Sampling.
• Sample pick up.

Step:5

• Grant of License to Manufacturer

Time Line BIS For Indian Manufacturer

Total Estimated Time: 45-60 Days

Surveillance Under ISI Mark

Once a BIS licence is granted to a Indian manufacturer under ISI, the certification doesn’t end there. BIS monitors licensees regularly to ensure continued compliance with the relevant Indian Standards and licensing conditions. This ongoing monitoring is called Surveillance.

Renewal BIS (ISI Mark) Licence

A BIS certified manufacturer's license remains valid for a period of one year. After this duration, it can be renewed for another year by submitting a renewal application along with the required fee. The payment details must be certified by a Chartered Accountant as part of the renewal process.

Difference Between BIS and ISI Mark

BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) is the national standards authority of India responsible for formulating product standards and issuing certifications. It decides which products require mandatory certification and defines the quality and safety norms they must follow. On the other hand, the ISI Mark is a certification symbol granted by BIS to products that meet its prescribed standards. The ISI Mark indicates that the product has successfully passed quality and safety tests and complies with Indian Standards. In simple terms, BIS is the regulatory body, while the ISI Mark is the proof of approval displayed on certified products.

Benefits of BIS Certification ISI Mark Certificate

BIS Certification, popularly known as the ISI Mark Certificate, offers multiple benefits for manufacturers, importers, and consumers in India. The biggest advantage of having BIS Certification is that it builds trust and confidence among customers. When a product carries the ISI mark, it assures buyers that the product is safe, reliable, and manufactured as per Indian quality standards. This directly enhances brand credibility and creates a positive image in the market.

Another major benefit is compliance with legal requirements. For many products such as electrical items, toys, and household appliances, BIS Certification is mandatory in India. Without it, companies cannot manufacture, sell, or import these products. Hence, BIS ensures smooth entry into the Indian market and protects businesses from legal penalties or product bans.

Apart from compliance, BIS Certification also helps companies gain a competitive edge. Products with the ISI mark are often preferred over uncertified alternatives, which increases sales and market acceptance. It also opens opportunities for international trade since global buyers trust certified products more.

In the long run, BIS Certification saves cost for manufacturers as well. By ensuring consistent quality, it reduces product failures, complaints, and returns. This not only increases customer satisfaction but also improves overall brand reputation. Ultimately, the ISI Mark works as a quality assurance symbol that supports business growth, consumer safety, and long-term success.

Frequently Asked Questions

The ISI mark is a certification mark provided by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). It indicates that a product conforms to the Indian Standards specified by BIS and is safe, reliable, and of good quality.

ISI stands for Indian Standards Institution, the former name of BIS (now Bureau of Indian Standards).

Yes, for certain products like electrical appliances, gas cylinders, cement, helmets, etc., the ISI mark is mandatory by law. For other products, it’s voluntary but encouraged.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issues the ISI certification after inspecting the product, testing samples in BIS-approved labs, and auditing the manufacturing process.

Every genuine ISI-marked product will have:
• The ISI logo
• A seven or ten-digit license number (like CM/L-xxxxxxx)
• The standard number (e.g., IS 302 for electric irons)
You can verify the license on the official BIS website.

Using a fake ISI mark is illegal. Manufacturers can be fined or prosecuted under the BIS Act. Consumers can file complaints with BIS if they suspect fraud.

Some key examples:
• Electric irons, heaters, cables
• Gas cylinders & regulators
• Cement
• Pressure cookers
• Helmets
• Toys (as per latest BIS norms)

BIS is the organization that sets Indian Standards and gives certifications. ISI is the mark that shows a product meets those standards.

Yes, through the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS) by BIS.

Usually valid for 1 or 2 years, depending on the product and renewal terms. It must be renewed periodically by the manufacturer.

1. Identify your product category under BIS mandatory certification list.
2. Submit application on the official BIS portal with all required documents.
3. Send product samples to a BIS-approved laboratory for testing.
4. Schedule a factory inspection conducted by BIS officials.
5. Receive test report and verification, then pay applicable fees.
6. BIS grants ISI Certification, allowing you to use the ISI mark on your product.
This process ensures compliance with Indian quality standards and improves your brand trust and market credibility.
